Hi everyone! I am new to the site and was really glad to find the group for parents. It's nice to have a place to go to discuss secular parenting. I have a twelve year old son and am teaching him about atheism and to demand evidence for things. He tells me that something can't be verified without evidence, lol. Looking forward to chatting with other atheist parents!
Just reading various forums and talking to people, I just wanted to say I think it's great how most of the fellow atheists I come across seem to have the same frame of mind when we tell our kids about our atheist philosophies but also add that they are free to believe what they choose.
Growing up in a catholic family and knowing lots of other religious families, I've never known any other parents to say, we are catholic, but you are free to believe what you want. It's always, the complete opposite, or at least that's what I've experienced. I raise my children as atheists, and as much as I want them to agree with my beliefs, I want them to come to their own conclusions, in time, even if it differs from mine.
Hi Missy!
I live in the Deep South too. Religion surrounds us.
My kids went to a Methodist pre-school which was really wonderful. I didn't like the religion part but I didn't worry about it too much. They did so much with the kids, from swim lessons to trips to the library and yes, chapel and Christmas pageant.
For 5K they went to a very good public school. If I could do it all over again I would have homeschooled them from the beginning and particularly from the beginning of 5-K.
My girl got molested by a held back kid when in 5-K. The teacher and the school refused to take steps to keep her safe. The same child molested several other girls that year. The solution they came up with was to medicate for ADHD.
We were advised to medicate and hold back our son in 5-K, all of the parents of boys were told this by that particular teacher. She had her own three kids on drugs. Our son was keeping up socially and academically. He wasn't even any sort of problem in the classroom so I declined.
My son joined a boys bible club after school. For a while he told us, he was a "believer."
Our girl was threatened by others if she didn't pray with them.
Today they are both NOT religious. I never pushed my views on them. I was always willing to discuss it though and anything else.
I exposed them to religion at times. As a homeschool family from 4th grade on, I made learning about different religious and belief systems all over the world a requirement.
Hi! I'm Missy I have a 8 and a 3 year old. I'm having a preschool dilemma. I unfortunately moved to the Bible belt and my daughters only options fpr school are daycare preschools which are super expensive or church school costs a lot less. My husband and I are both Atheist but he is ok with sending her to a church because we were both raised Catholic he even went to catholic school until high school and we both made our own choices on religion. He feels I am shoving my views down her throat if we hide religion from her. I feel being surrounded by it will force her to believe in it. Has anyone else been in this situation?? I would keep her home but I want her to be in a school environment away from me.
